Parkinson’s Disease Treatment<\/h1>\n\n

There is no cure for PD, but therapies and medicines can help reduce symptoms. Other treatments include surgery, physical therapy, and speech therapy. <\/h3><\/div><\/div>\n\n

Medication Treatments<\/h3>\n\n

Levodopa\/carbidopa, a combination medicine that increases the amount of dopamine<\/mark><\/strong> in the brain, is the most common medication for PD. <\/p>\n\n

Doctors may use other medicines such as anticholinergics<\/strong><\/mark> to reduce involuntary muscle movement.<\/p><\/div>\n\n

Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)<\/h3>\n\n

\u2022 A surgically implanted device<\/strong> sends electrical impulses to specific brain areas, improving movement.<\/p>\n\n

\u2022 The major advantage is that DBS is reversible, while intentional scarring damage is not. This treatment approach is almost always an option in later stages of Parkinson\u2019s disease when levodopa therapy becomes less effective, and in people who have tremor that doesn\u2019t seem to respond to the usual medications.<\/p><\/div>\n\n

Experimental Treatments<\/h3>\n\n

Some of the experimental treatments could help with PE such as:<\/p>\n\n

  • Stem cell transplants<\/strong><\/mark><\/strong> \u2013 These add new dopamine-using neurons into your brain to take over for damaged ones.<\/li>\n\n
  • Neuron-repair treatments<\/strong><\/mark><\/strong> \u2013 These treatments try to repair damaged neurons and encourage new neurons to form.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
